Doctors and Scientists Race to Understand a Rising Form of Heart Failure

Approximately 3 million Americans live with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), a condition that is becoming increasingly prevalent, particularly among women. This form of heart failure is rising alongside aging populations and growing risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. More than 80% of HFpEF patients also develop pulmonary hypertension, which increases blood pressure in the lungs and complicates treatment. Researchers and clinicians are working urgently to better understand this condition and develop effective therapies to improve outcomes for affected patients.
