Family Cancer History Predicts Colorectal Cancer Risk in IBD Patients

A new Swedish registry study from Karolinska Institutet, published in Gastroenterology, reveals that people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who have multiple close relatives with colorectal cancer face significantly higher risk of developing the disease themselves. The research demonstrates a strong correlation between family cancer burden and individual cancer risk among IBD patients. These findings suggest that future cancer screening guidelines should give greater consideration to the number of cancer cases in a patient's family history. For IBD patients in Puerto Rico with a family history of colorectal cancer, this study underscores the importance of discussing personalized screening strategies with their healthcare providers.
