From Cannabis to Psilocybin: What the Cannabis Movement Can Teach the Psychedelic Renaissance
Cannabis paved the way for therapeutic psychedelics by breaking through decades of research restrictions and shifting international regulation through persistent patient advocacy. Today, psilocybin and therapeutic MDMA follow a similar trajectory but with distinct regulatory frameworks that cannot be simply copied from cannabis policy. The cannabis movement offers valuable lessons for the emerging psychedelic field, particularly the critical warning against overselling treatments and overpromising therapeutic outcomes. Both movements share a common challenge: balancing scientific credibility with patient access while navigating complex regulatory landscapes. Understanding these parallels and differences is essential for Puerto Rico's healthcare stakeholders as psychedelic-assisted therapies advance toward clinical availability.
