Genetic Data May Help Predict Steroid Side Effects, Research Shows

New research suggests that incorporating genetic information into oral corticosteroid prescribing could help predict which patients are at higher risk for side effects. Oral corticosteroids are widely used to treat chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis, asthma, and autoimmune diseases by reducing inflammation and calming the immune system. However, more than one in 10 patients experience side effects, particularly with long-term use. This genetic approach could enable more personalized treatment strategies, helping doctors prescribe steroids more safely and effectively while minimizing adverse reactions in vulnerable patients.
