Heat Deaths Doubled in Belgium During June 2026 Heat Wave, Study Finds

A groundbreaking study from Vrije Universiteit Brussel reveals that human-induced climate change made Belgium's June 2026 heat wave 3.9°C hotter, directly causing more than half of the 1,181 heat-related deaths recorded between June 17-28. Researchers attributed 665 deaths—56% of the total—specifically to anthropogenic climate change, marking the first time heat-related deaths during a specific Belgian heat wave have been linked to human activities. This research underscores how climate change amplifies mortality risk during extreme heat events, particularly affecting vulnerable populations with cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. The findings highlight the urgent need for public health adaptation strategies and climate mitigation efforts to protect citizens from increasing heat-related health emergencies.
