HPV-Related Cancer Risk Higher in People with HIV and Organ Transplant Recipients

A new study published in JAMA Network Open reveals that people with HIV (PWH) and solid-organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) face significantly elevated odds of developing HPV-related cancers. The human papillomavirus is responsible for multiple cancer types, including cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers. Both groups have compromised or suppressed immune systems, which reduces their ability to fight HPV infections and prevent cancerous transformations. These findings underscore the critical importance of HPV vaccination, regular screening, and close medical monitoring for these vulnerable populations to improve outcomes and reduce cancer incidence.
