Liver tumors may depend on LARS to withstand stress and keep multiplying

Researchers from the University of Illinois have discovered that leucyl-tRNA synthetase (LARS), a protein essential for cell survival, plays a critical role in helping liver cancer cells survive stress and continue multiplying. By reducing LARS protein levels, scientists were able to impede liver cancer cell multiplication, opening new therapeutic possibilities. This breakthrough, led by Lin-Feng Chen, Susan A. Martinis, and graduate student Xiaodan Lin, identifies a potential target for developing new cancer treatments. Understanding how cancer cells exploit LARS to thrive could lead to more effective strategies for combating hepatocellular carcinoma and improving patient outcomes.
