Omalizumab Shows Promise as Alternative to Oral Immunotherapy for Food Allergies

New research presented at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology annual meeting shows that omalizumab is as effective as multifood oral immunotherapy (mOIT) for treating food allergies. Patients with one to three food allergies were able to safely introduce and continue eating their allergenic foods 12 months after receiving either treatment. This finding offers an important alternative option for individuals with food allergies who may not be candidates for oral immunotherapy or prefer a different treatment approach. Both treatments demonstrated significant clinical efficacy in helping patients achieve sustained unresponsiveness to previously problematic foods.
