Only 1 in 10 Women Worldwide Has Been Tested for HPV to Prevent Cervical Cancer

An international study published in The Lancet Global Health reveals that only 8% of women aged 30-49 had undergone HPV (human papillomavirus) testing in the five years prior to 2022. This alarming statistic highlights a significant gap in cervical cancer screening efforts worldwide. HPV testing is a critical preventive tool for detecting precancerous changes and preventing cervical cancer, one of the most preventable cancers when caught early. The research, led by scientists from the Unit of Infections and Cancer, underscores the urgent need to improve access to and awareness of HPV screening programs globally.
