Opinion: Emergency departments are not equipped to help patients with dementia

Emergency departments across the country lack adequate training, resources, and infrastructure to effectively care for patients with dementia, according to healthcare experts. These facilities often fail to address the unique behavioral, cognitive, and communication challenges that dementia patients experience during medical crises. The absence of specialized protocols and dementia-trained staff can lead to increased patient distress, longer hospital stays, and suboptimal treatment outcomes.
