Opinion: Proposed U.S. Census Changes Could Be Catastrophic for Public Health

Social epidemiologist Nancy Krieger warns that proposed changes to U.S. census data collection could severely harm public health efforts. Census data is crucial for tracking disease patterns, health disparities, and demographic risk factors across populations, enabling targeted interventions for conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Removing or reducing demographic questions would obscure which communities face the greatest health burdens and prevent equitable resource allocation. Without accurate data, public health agencies cannot identify emerging health crises or design effective prevention programs for vulnerable populations.
