Proton Therapy Shows No Survival Benefit for Advanced Liver Cancer Patients

A major clinical trial (NRG-GI003) comparing proton therapy to conventional photon therapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma found that proton therapy did not improve overall survival, the study's primary goal. The trial was halted after crossing the futility boundary at interim analysis, indicating proton therapy was unlikely to demonstrate benefit. Additionally, proton therapy failed to improve secondary endpoints including progression-free survival and local progression control. These findings suggest that standard photon radiation therapy remains the preferred approach for treating advanced liver cancer patients.
