Researchers from the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) and the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) have developed CONAN, a breakthrough technology that uses mesenchymal cells as vehicles to deliver oncolytic viruses with precise timing control. This innovative system allows clinicians to activate the cancer-fighting viruses at specific moments during treatment, improving targeted delivery and minimizing damage to healthy tissue. Oncolytic viruses work by selectively infecting and destroying cancer cells while leaving normal cells intact. This advancement represents a significant step forward in personalized cancer therapy, offering patients a more controlled and potentially more effective treatment option with fewer side effects.
