Simple Steroid Treatment Change Halves Early Deaths in Childhood Leukemia

A landmark Indian clinical trial involving over 3,000 children found that administering steroids in short bursts instead of continuously can halve early treatment-related deaths in children with acute B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), without compromising cure rates. The study, led by the Indian Childhood Collaborative Leukemia (ICiCle) group with University of Manchester researchers, was conducted across six major medical centers in India. This simple modification to existing treatment protocols offers significant hope for improving survival outcomes in pediatric leukemia patients, particularly in resource-limited settings. The findings demonstrate that strategic adjustments to proven therapies can dramatically reduce mortality risk while maintaining treatment efficacy.
