Sitting on Japanese Tatami Mats May Reduce Anxiety and Improve Focus

Researchers at Kyushu University published findings in Scientific Reports showing that mats made from Japanese Igusa rush grass are associated with increased brain activity in regions related to concentration and task engagement. Study participants reported reduced tension and anxiety after using Igusa mats, which have been a staple of Japanese culture for centuries. The research provides scientific validation for this traditional material's potential mental health benefits. These findings suggest that environmental design choices, such as flooring materials, may play a role in supporting emotional well-being and cognitive performance.
