Socioeconomic Challenges Affect Lung Cancer Screening Experience

New research published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology reveals that while low-dose chest CT screening for lung cancer is generally well tolerated, experiences vary significantly across socioeconomic groups. Participants with lower incomes and those relying on safety-net healthcare reported higher testing-related burden, including greater physical discomfort and emotional anxiety. Insurance status and employment circumstances were identified as key factors influencing screening experiences. These findings highlight critical equity gaps in lung cancer prevention and point to opportunities for healthcare systems to improve accessibility and support for vulnerable populations undergoing this important early detection procedure.
