Study across 8 European countries demonstrates feasibility of screening children for type 1 diabetes

Researchers from eight European countries have successfully demonstrated that screening children for type 1 diabetes is feasible and practical. The pilot programs, presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes annual meeting, recommend implementing three screening windows at ages 2-4, 6-8, and 10-15 years. Early detection of type 1 diabetes can help identify the condition before serious complications develop, allowing families to begin treatment and management promptly. The consortium, led by Dr. Peter Achenbach and Professor Anette-Gabriele Ziegler from Helmholtz Munich, advocates for rolling out these screening programs across Europe to improve outcomes for at-risk children.
