Study Links Long-Term Irritability After Concussions in Veterans to PTSD, Chronic Pain

Research from the CU Anschutz Marcus Institute for Brain Health reveals that irritability persisting long after concussions in military veterans is strongly associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, chronic pain, and hearing difficulties in noisy environments. The study examined veterans with chronic mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and found significant connections between irritability and these comorbid conditions. These findings suggest that irritability may serve as an important indicator of underlying mental health and physical health challenges in this population. Understanding these associations could improve clinical assessment and treatment approaches for veterans struggling with long-term effects of concussions.
