The Plague Never Went Away: Cases Still Reported Annually in Africa and the US

Despite its notorious reputation for devastating Europe in the 14th century, plague remains an active infectious disease with cases reported nearly every year across parts of Africa and the United States. The bacterial infection, caused by Yersinia pestis, is now easily treatable with modern antibiotics when diagnosed promptly. While rare in developed nations, plague continues to pose a public health concern in certain regions, particularly in areas with wildlife reservoirs. Early recognition and antibiotic treatment are critical for preventing severe complications and mortality. Patients experiencing fever, swollen lymph nodes, or respiratory symptoms in endemic areas should seek immediate medical attention.
