Weight Loss Drugs Linked to Lower Risk of Obesity-Related Cancers

A major study of over 229,000 obese adults without diabetes in the United States reveals that weight loss medications significantly reduce cancer risk. GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) were associated with a 41% decrease in overall obesity-related cancer risk compared to diet and exercise alone. This finding is particularly significant for Puerto Rico, where obesity rates remain elevated. The research suggests these medications may offer additional health benefits beyond weight management, potentially lowering the burden of obesity-related cancers in the population.
