Wildfire Smoke Linked to Low Birth Weight and Premature Births During Pregnancy

A major study of 3.4 million births in Spain reveals that wildfire exposure during pregnancy significantly increases health risks for newborns. Researchers identified two key mechanisms: psychological stress and air pollution from fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in smoke. The findings show a 10% increased likelihood of low birth weight and elevated rates of preterm births.
