SAFE Score Outperforms Other Risk Scores for Predicting Cirrhosis in Steatotic Liver Disease

A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that the steatosis-associated fibrosis estimator (SAFE) score is the most effective tool for predicting cirrhosis risk in patients with steatotic liver disease (SLD). The research compared multiple risk assessment scores and demonstrated that SAFE provided the greatest net benefit for clinical decision-making. This finding is significant because accurate cirrhosis prediction enables earlier intervention and better patient outcomes. Steatotic liver disease, which includes fatty liver conditions both related and unrelated to alcohol consumption, affects millions worldwide and can progress to serious liver complications. The SAFE score may help healthcare providers better identify high-risk patients who need intensive monitoring and treatment.
