Atezolizumab + Chemotherapy Doubles Event-Free Survival in Resectable Lung Cancer

Final results from the Phase III IMpower030 trial demonstrate that patients with resectable stage II–IIIB non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving perioperative atezolizumab combined with platinum-based chemotherapy achieved a median event-free survival of 62.8 months, more than double the 34.9 months observed with chemotherapy alone. This immunotherapy-based approach represents a significant advancement in treating surgically resectable lung cancer, extending the time before disease progression or recurrence occurs. The combination strategy leverages atezolizumab's immune-checkpoint inhibition alongside traditional chemotherapy for enhanced treatment efficacy. These findings provide important therapeutic options for early-stage lung cancer patients and may reshape treatment protocols in oncology practices. The substantial survival benefit highlights the potential of perioperative immunotherapy in improving long-term outcomes for eligible patients with resectable disease.
