Local Consolidative Therapy Does Not Improve Survival in Metastatic Lung Cancer After Dual Immunotherapy

A major clinical trial presented at the IASLC 2026 World Conference found that adding local consolidative therapy (LCT) after treatment with nivolumab plus ipilimumab—two immunotherapy drugs—did not improve overall survival or progression-free survival in patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This finding applies even to patients with oligometastatic disease, a more limited form of metastatic cancer. The results suggest that for this patient population, dual immunotherapy alone may be sufficient, potentially sparing patients from additional invasive procedures. These findings could reshape treatment strategies and help oncologists make more informed decisions about which patients benefit from consolidative local treatments.
