Intensive Breathing Exercises Linked to Altered Brain Activity and Consciousness

New brain-imaging research reveals that intensive breathing exercises can reduce blood flow to the brain by up to 45% and significantly alter communication between brain networks. Participants reported experiences similar to psychedelic effects, including altered perception, vivid mental imagery, feelings of unity, and changes in self-awareness. Presented at the ECNP Congress in Munich, the findings suggest that changes in brain communication patterns, rather than reduced blood flow alone, are the primary drivers of these altered states of consciousness. This research provides new insights into how breathing techniques affect brain function and may have implications for understanding consciousness and therapeutic applications.
