Promising broad-spectrum antiviral candidate against enteroviruses identified

Researchers at the National University of Singapore have discovered a promising antiviral compound capable of inhibiting multiple enteroviruses, including Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), an emerging respiratory pathogen associated with severe respiratory illness and acute flaccid myelitis. EV-D68 has been linked to paralysis and other serious neurological complications, particularly in children. This broad-spectrum antiviral candidate represents a significant advancement in treating enterovirus infections, for which currently no specific antiviral therapies exist. The development of effective treatments could substantially improve outcomes for patients affected by these potentially debilitating viral infections.
